Eden Gardens… one of the largest cricketing stadium in the world. One of the most beautiful too. It is often compared with MCG (Melbourne Cricket Ground) situated in Australia.

An Account Of A 1996 World Cup Semi-final Match:-

People in the cricketing world knows the name or the ground very well. For the wrong reasons though. In 1996 cricket world cup, which was held in Indian subcontinent, India and Sri Lanka had played a semi-final match here.

So whats the big deal here?

Only that the match had to be stopped due to public anger spilling over to the ground! Spectators threw bottles at the Sri Lankan players because India lost wickets in quick sessions.

Even Sri Lanka had lost wickets in that way. The problem was with the pitch. Here a world cup semi final match was being played in a such a unplayable wicket. It had no pace, no bounce. It was dusty and big cracks could be seen everywhere! The curator was Kalyan Mitra.

After watching the test match, someone has written some rules have to be incorporated by ICC to give the other teams a perfect clarification

1. Ricky Ponting – (THE TRULY GENUINE CRICKETER OF THE CRICKET ERA AND WHOSE INTEGRITY SHOULD NOT BE DOUBTED) should be considered as the FOURTH UMPIRE. As per the new rules, FOURTH UMPIRE decision is final and will over ride any decisions taken by any other umpires. ON-FIELD umpires can seek the assistance of RICKY PONTING even if he is not on the field. This rule is to be made, so that every team should understand the importance of the FOURTH UMPIRE.

2. While AUSTRALIAN TEAM is bowling, If the ball flies anywhere close to the AUSTRALIAN FIELDER(WITHIN 5 metre distance), the batsman is to be considered OUT irrelevant of whether the catch was taken cleanly or grassed. Any decision for further clarification should be seeked from the FOURTH UMPIRE. This is made to ensure that the cricket is played with SPORTIVE SPIRIT by all the teams.

In a combined protest from Indian team and the cricket BCCI, have decided to hold the tour until final decisions have been taken by the cricket gorverning body ICC on the Harbhajan and umpiring issue.

Harbhajan was called for hearing by the match referee. He was accompanied by Sachin, Kumble, the team manager and the media manager.
